THERE IS ENOUGH SPACE TO COEXIST WITH ANIMALS’

Nearly a 100 activists and animal lovers came together on Saturday morning at Freedom Park to highlight the extreme cruelty stray dogs are facing across the country.

The participants urged people to stop cruelty towards stray animals and be compassionate.

Mohamed Yusuf, an animal welfare activist who traveled all the way from Tamil Nadu to join the campaign, said, “We have gathered today to protest against all incidents of animal cruelty in the recent past. From animal abuse to mass killing and from the relocation of stray dogs to harassment of caretakers, we decided to stand united against such cruelty.”

Animal welfare workers, referring to the recent episodes of animal cruelty in Kerala said that any aggression or hostility that stray dogs are subjected to only makes them aggressive and hostile towards humans.

“No law prohibits feeding stray dogs inside or outside community premises and gated complexes. Citizens doing so are performing their duty cast upon them by our constitution. Moreover, any aggression or hostility that stray dogs are subjected to only makes them aggressive and hostile towards humans. What is happening in Kerala is one such example of this and we humans are the ones to be blamed,” said another volunteer.

According to the participants and volunteers, the idea behind organising this campaign was to bring awareness against animal cruelty to the general public.

Participants said human reaction has become very brutish especially when there are voiceless animals at the receiving end and the campaign is to spread the awareness that we should be careful about how we treat all life, not restricted to humans. They also propagated the inclusion of animal welfare as a subject in schools.

“We want to educate animal lovers and feeders about their rights and guide them on human-animal harmonious living in our neighbourhood. We are also mourning the animals that we have lost to human cruelty across the nation,” said Susan Timothy, another participant.
